Bakerton News — Assessor T. O. Link was around collecting the annual capitation tax yesterday. Several of his victims were heard to say that they were very glad they were not called upon to pay the bachelor tax, which rumor says has been levied in some of the other States, and threatens to attain popularity of another national drive or even to assume the proportions of another constitutional amendment.

Bakerton Baseball Scores
Bakerton News. The Regulars and the Scrubs crossed bats on the home diamond Saturday afternoon. The score was 7 to 2 with the Scrubs on the long end. The features of the game were the catching of “Catty” Hoffman and the fielding of “Sandy” Flanagan for the Scrubs.

Rev. Wilson Dies at Baltimore
Rev. Father Thomas J. Wilson, who some years ago was the rector of the Catholic churches of Harper’s Ferry and Shepherdstown, died last week in a hospital in Baltimore. He had been located for some time past at Old Point Comfort, Va.

Mrs. John G. Flanagan, of Baltimore, Mrs. George W. Moler, of Washington, and Misses Guthrie and Helen Thompson, of Three Churches, W. Va., were here the past week attending the Thompson-Moler wedding.

Obituary: Alice Flanagan Hopper
Just before we go to press we learn of the death of Mrs. Alice Hopper, a lifelong resident of the Bakerton neighborhood, which occurred this morning about 5 o’clock. She had been ill for a week or two with pleurisy, and this was followed by pneumonia, which quickly terminated fatally. Mrs. Hopper, whose maiden name was Flanagan, was the widow of A. M. Hopper, and was 67 years of age. She was a kind-hearted woman, a loving mother and devoted friend, and she will be greatly missed in the community where she had lived so long. She is survived by four sons and three daughters: John and James Hopper, of Kearneysville, William, of Martinsburg, and Charles, at home; Mrs. Charles Cooger, Mrs. Francis Cole, and Mrs. Hunter Swann, of Washington. The funeral we are informed will be held Friday morning at 10 o’clock.

Hog Cholera Havoc in Jefferson County
The hog cholera is still playing havoc in various sections of the county. There have been serious losses in Shepherdstown and vicinity, and scores of fine porkers have died in the Bakerton neighborhood. The disease has now invaded the Duffields section. Many persons have sold their hogs, rather than run the risk of having them die.

Houser’s Health Declines; Flanagan Transferred
D. Raleigh Houser, who for a number of years has been the efficient superintendent of the Washington Building Lime Company’s plant at Bakerton, this county, has been obliged to give up his work temporarily on account of a breakdown in his health. Walter J. Flanagan, who has been in charge of the Standard Lime and Stone Company’s works at Strasburg, Va., for some time past, has been placed in charge of the Bakerton plant. Mr. House has many friends throughout this section, and we join with them in the hope that he may soon be fully restored to health.
