He was in the Ambulance service, and during the fighting was right up with the infantry and assisted in carrying the wounded off the battlefields of France. He relates one instance of helping to carry a certain former resident of Charles Town and Winchester, whom he recognized, off the field badly wounded in the arm and leg.
