  • Bakerton Items, Visitations, Campmeeting, Business and Drought

    Bakerton, W. Va – July 24.

    Mrs. Alice Trundle, of Washington, is spending the summer with her sister, Mrs. George Duke, near Bakerton.

    Misses Sallie and Annie White, of Montgomery county, are visiting their uncle, Robert Duke, of Bakerton.

    Mr. Arthur Trundle, of Washington, made a flying visit to Bakerton last Saturday and returned home on Sunday.

    Camp meeting begins at Moler’s, near this place, the 27th of this month, and will continue two weeks or more.

    Crops and gardens are suffering greatly from the drought. Some sections were visited by a heavy rainfall last Tuesday, but we only got enough to lay the dust. We have had no rain in this section for a month or more.

    Times are hard, but still young people will get married. A young couple, Mr. Walter Caton and Miss Carrie Staley, of Moler’s, eloped last Saturday to Shepherdstown, where they had the knot tied by F. A. Strother, and went on their way rejoicing that they had outwitted the old folks at home.

    Business seems to be brisk about Bakerton. The thriving young merchants, R. H. Moler and Jesse M. Engle, seem to be doing well and are looking happy.

  • Obituary: G. W. Hoffmaster

    George William Hoffmaster of 720 Winchester Avenue, Martinsburg, W. Va., died Wednesday night in Martinsburg Hospital after a long illness. A former resident of Bakerton, he was born at Duffields in Jefferson County, February 27, 1910, son of the late Clayton and Annie Welch Hoffmaster. Mr. Hoffmaster had been employed as a mechanic by the Martinsburg Plant of Corning Glass Works and was a member of the Zion Presbyterian Church of Bakerton.

    Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Fairy Kidwiler Hoffmaster, at the home; one step-son, Donald Kidwiler, Glen Burnie; three sisters, Mrs. Edith Hill, Bakerton, W. Va.; Mrs. Mary Stemple, Barberton, Ohio; Mrs. Esther DeHaven, Hedgesville, W. Va., seven brothers, Roy and Melvin Hoffmaster, both of Bakerton, W. Va., James, John and Robert Hoffmaster, all of Martinsburg, W. Va.; Leonard Hoffmaster, Frederick, and Harry Hoffmaster, Denver, Col.

    The body is at the Eackles Funeral Home in Harpers Ferry where services will be conducted at the funeral chapel Saturday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. David Dawson. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town.

  • Bobby Welsh spends Thanksgiving in Baltimore

    Mr. and Mrs. Reno Eaton and family, Mr. Charles Whitmore, of Camp Hill, accompanied by Bobby Welch, of Bakerton, spent Thanksgiving Day and the weekend in Baltimore, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Brender.

  • Wed At Bolivar: Bobby Welsh & June Eaton

    WED AT BOLIVAR, W. VA. — Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Linden Welsh were married May 1 in the Methodist church at Bolivar, W. Va. She is the former Miss June Dolores Eaton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reno W. Eaton, Harpers Ferry, W. Va., while her husband’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Welsh, Sr., of Bakerton, W. Va. The bride’s pastor, Rev. E. T. Harrison, performed the double ring ceremony in the presence of the immediate families.

    The bride, given in marriage by her father, was attired in a white linen suit with navy and white accessories and a corsage of white carnations. She carried a white prayer book. Mrs. M. D. Welsh, Jr., her only attendant, wore a lilac suit with pink accessories and corsage. M. D. Welsh, Jr., brother of the groom, was best man.

    The mother of the bride wore a purple dress with matching accessories and a corsage of white carnations. The groom’s mother was in a black and white dress with black accessories and a corsage of white carnations.

    Mrs. Charles Dunn, organist, played the traditional wedding marches and soft music during the ceremony.

    Following the ceremony a buffet supper was served at the bride’s home. The bride’s table was decorated with a wedding cake topped with a miniature bride and groom and a centerpiece of pink and white dogwood.

    Afterward the couple left for a brief wedding trip through Virginia. For her traveling ensemble the bride chose a gold and gray checked suit with black accessories and a corsage of white carnations.

    Mrs. Welsh is a member of this year’s graduating class at Harpers Ferry High School. The groom was graduated from the same high school in 1950. He has just completed basic training at Camp Roberts, Calif., and on May 9 he reported to the Camp Kilmer, N. J. from where he expected to be sent to Germany. While her husband is in the service, Mrs. Welsh will reside with her parents.

  • Obituary: Harvey L. Eichelberger

    Harvey Lee Eichelberger, 72, died on Tuesday after a long illness, in Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

    He was a resident of Downsville. Born in Jefferson County, W. Va., he was a son of the late George Lee Eichelberger and Katie Irene Welsh Eichelberger.

    Survivors are two sons, Lester and Thomas Eichelberger of Bakerton, W. Va. and Hagerstown; and two daughters, Mrs. Louise Watson of Baltimore, and Mrs. Anna Lee Howard, Boonsboro.

    Sixteen grandchildren. Three sisters, Mrs. Iva Kretzer, Dargan, Md., near Harpers Ferry, Mrs. Ethel Churchey of Sharpsburg, and Mrs. Daisy Churchey of Hagerstown; six brothers, Charles Eichelberger of Martinsburg, W. Va., Frank Eichelberger of Hagerstown, Luther Eichelberger of Dargan, Walter Eichelberger of Chestnut Grove, Marvin Eichelberger of Hagerstown, and Donald Eichelberger of Dargan.

    The deceased was a retired employee of the Standard Lime and Cement Corp. of the Bakerton Plant. He was a member of the Church of God, Bakerton, W. Va., and a veteran of the U. S. Army, World War I. A former resident of Bakerton, Jefferson County, W. Va., he was a recent patient at Woburn Manor Nursing Home at Downesville.

    Services were held Saturday from the Church of God, at Bakerton, at 2 p. m. with the Rev. John Myers officiating. Burial was at Samples Manor, Md. Eackles Funeral home, funeral directors.

  • Obituary: Walter Manuel

    Walter Alexandria Manuel, born in Bakerton, W. Va. on March 28, 1919, and the son of the late Walter and Elsie Welch Manuel, died Feb. 3, in Newton D. Baker Hospital, where he had been a patient for 45 days. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Manuel, and one son, Thomas L., who is at Shepherd Air Force Base, in Witchia Falls, Texas, and is a graduate of Harpers Ferry High School, and one sister, Mrs. Bertha Hoffman, of Martinsburg. The deceased was a veteran of World War II, U.S. Army. He had been manager of a frozen food locker in Martinsburg, for quite some time. The body rested at the Eackles funeral home, Harpers Ferry, and was removed to the Brown funeral will be held today, at 1:30 p. m., with the Rev. Lee Falk and the Rev. James Smith officiating. Burial in Elmwood cemetery in Martinsburg.

  • Obit: Anna Mary Swope

    MRS. ANNA MARY SWOPE

    Mrs. Anna Mary Swope, 59, of Brunswick, wife of George Kenneth Swope, died yesterday at the Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

    She was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Annie Welch Ingram.

    Survivors besides her husband are, three sons, Robert, Portsmouth, Va.; Marion, Brunswick; and Larry, Hawaii; three sisters, Mrs. Clara Bittinger, Hagerstown; Mrs. Agnes Jamison, and Mrs. Katherine Dobson, both of Sharpsburg; and two brothers, Patrick Ingram, Hagerstown; and John Ingram, Dargan.

    Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p. m. at the C. H. Feete and Brothers Funeral Home, Brunswick, with the Rev. H. F. Churchey, pastor of the Church of God, Sharpsburg, officiating.

    Friends may call at the funeral Home after 2 p. m. today. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville.

  • Harper’s Ferry Notes

    According to the Harper’s Ferry Sentinel farm laborers are scarce in that vicinity and high priced, owing to all the laborers being in demand by the following industries in operation in the district. The Halltown Straw Board Mill, Shenandoah Pulp Mill, Potomac Pulp Mill, Keller Lime Kilns, Virginia Ore Bank, Baker Lime Kilns, Hoke Kilns and Brick Yard and Becker Lime Kilns.

    Capt. Green, who has built a large hotel on the Virginia side, opposite that place, proposes to build a large artificial lake, which will be fed by the numerous springs in the vicinity, to be used as a bathing, boating and fishing ground. Bath houses will be built and a miniature Atlantic scene will probably be the result. The lake will be well stocked with fish.

    All the summer boarding houses and hotels are well filled and are doing good business.

    The Harper’s Ferry Mining, Manufacturing and Improvement Company will issue their prospectus in about ten days, when they will be ready for business.

  • Obituary: George Lee Eichelberger

    Mr. George Lee Eichelberger, aged 83 years, died Dec. 18 in Washington county Hospital, Hagerstown, where he had been a patient for three weeks. He was a resident of Dargon, near Harpers Ferry, and was a son of the late Hamilton and Annie Roulette Eichelberger, and was a retired employee of the Standard Lime and Stone Company, Bakerton. Surviving are ten children, Harvey, Bakerton; Mrs. Iva Kretzer, Dargan; Charles, Martinsburg; Frank, Hagerstown; Luther, at home; Walter, Trego; Mrs. Ethel Churchy, Sharpsburg; Marvin, Hagerstown; Donald, at home; sister, Mrs. Minnie Hoffmaster, Samples Manor; 27 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. Services were held December 20 at Dargon.
