  • Fourth of July Claims, 1886

    Claims Allowed. — Among the claims allowed to West Virginia by the Second Comptroller of the Treasury, and for which appropriation has been made by Congress, are the following for Berkeley and Jefferson counties. They are known as “Fourth of July Claims:”

  • Married, Nannie Caton and Hoffman

    Mr. T. J. Hoffman, a former resident of this county, but now of Eakle’s Mills, Md., and Miss Nannie Caton, of this vicinity, quietly stole a march on their friends last week by going to Hagerstown, where they were married by Rev. J. T. Shaeffer. We wish them great good luck.

    TRUSTEE’S AND CONSTABLE’S SALE!

    By Virtue of a Deed of Trust, given by George W. Caton to the undersigned, which Deed is of record in the Clerk’s Office of Jefferson County, to secure certain debts, therein specified to Robert Lucas, Dr. John Reynolds and A. Humerickhouse, I will on Saturday the 30th day of July, 1859, sell at Public Auction, to the highest bidder, at the residence of the said Caton, near Brin’s Ferry, the following property or so much of it as will be necessary to discharge the requirements of the Deed of Trust, to-wit:

    1 horse,
    Two Mules, One Cow,
    1 WAGON and HARNESS,
    1 pair of Wagon Ladders, 1 CART–
    Household and Kitchen FURNITURE, &c.
    Sale to take place at 10 o’clock A. M.

  • G. W. Caton Accident

    One day last week while Mr. Geo W. Caton, who lives below town, was hauling lumber in a two-horse wagon the horses were frightened by a dog that jumped over a fence and barked at them. The horses ran away and broke up the wagon pretty badly. Mr. Caton was thrown from the wagon, but escaped with a few bruises.

    Died Oct. 17, 1862, near Kerneysville, Turner Ashby, son of James F. and A. M. Randal, aged 8 months, 2 weeks, and 0 days.
    “I take these little lambs said He,

    On the 13th of Sept. 1861, Alcinda Taylor Bowers, daughter of Henry F. and Margaret E. Bowers, aged about 2 years.

    Near this place, June 1, 1865, George William Thompson, son of Boston Thompson, aged 4 years, 5 months and 6 days.

    At Duffield’s Depot, Oct. 30, 1861, Mrs. Mary Hunter, aged about 58 years.

    On the 4th of January, 1862, Edward Lee Caton, son of George and Margaret Caton, aged 2 months, 2 weeks and 4 days.

    On the morning of the 20th of December, in Bolivar, Jefferson county, Va., John A. Schaeffer, in the 77th year of his age.
