  • Flooding and Drift

    A drowned horse is one of the objects in a big pile of drift below the cement mill. It came down in the flood last week. Its halter was still fastened to what was evidently a part of a stable. Mr. Geo. W. Caton, who lives near the cement mill, stretched wire between a couple of trees during the high water and caught drift wood enough to last him about ten years. The river road was filled with mud and drift in some places.

  • Caton/Staley Surprise Wedding

    There was another wedding surprise on Saturday evening, when Mr. Walter Caton and Miss Carrie B. Staley called at the Southern Methodist parsonage and were married by Rev. F. A. Strother. Both are from the same neighborhood, east of town, and the bride is the daughter of Mr. James P. Staley.

  • County Court; Hearing for Burke (Engle) and Examining Court Waived For Boyer (Flanagan)

    COUNTY COURT.– Redman Burke, who stabbed Phillip Engle, of Harper’s Ferry, on the 4th of July last, had a hearing on Monday and Tuesday last, before an Examining Court. He was remanded to jail to undergo trial before the Circuit Court, in October next. Counsel of the Commonwealth, C. B. Harding and Andrew Hunter, Esqs. For the defence, Messrs. Lucas and Son, and Henry Hunter.

    An examining Court has been waived in the ease of Boyer for the killing of Flanegan.– Free Press.

  • Marriage of John Flanagan & Ruth Moler

    Mr. John G. Flanagan, Jr., and Miss Ruth E. Moler, both of Bakerton, this county, were married in Hagerstown yesterday by Rev. R. L. Wright at the Methodist parsonage.

  • Death: Frank Winks

    Frank Wins, formerly of Dargan, died in Chicago, aged 39 years. His remains were brought here and interred in Mountain View Cemetery Tuesday, after services in the Lutheran Church.

  • Obit: Mrs. Mary C. Licklider

    Mrs. Mary C. Licklider, for many years a greatly esteemed resident of this neighborhood, died last Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kephart, near Duffields, following an illness of a couple of weeks from paralysis. Mrs. Licklider, whose maiden name was Flanagan, was the widow of John C. Licklider, and was 75 years of age. All of her long life was spent in this vicinity, where she was highly regarded by all who knew her. She had been from her youth a consistent member of the Lutheran Church of Uvilla, and was exemplary in all her ways. Kind-hearted and considerate, interested in all good works, she will be missed by many relatives and friends. She is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Walter Kephart and Mrs. Charles Melvin, of this county, and Mrs. J. D. Thomas, of Loudoun county, Va.; also a sister, Mrs. Alice Hopper, of Bakeron, who is now the last survivor of the family. The funeral service was held in the Uvilla Lutheran Church on Tuesday, conducted by Rev. I. D. Worman, and the body was laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown.

  • Obit: Mrs. Martha J. Moler

    It is with much regret that we record the death of Mrs. Martha J. Moler, the beloved wife of Mr. Jacob S. Moler, which occurred at her home near Bakerton last Sunday morning. Mrs. Moler had been ill from cancer for a long time. Some months ago an operation was performed by which it was hoped she would obtain relief, but the disease returned in malignant form, causing her great suffering until God took her to that home where there is no sorrow or pain. Mrs. Moler was 44 years, 11 months and 10 days old. Her maiden name was Link, and she was a sister of Messers George and William Link, of this vicinity. She is survived by her devoted husband, one son, Albert T., one daughter, Ada L., and her mother. She was a consistent member of the Lutheran church of Uvilla, and was a woman who had the respect of all who knew her. The funeral service was held at her late home on Monday, and was conducted by Rev. Dr. Charles Ghiselin, of Shepherdstown, and Rev. J. E. Triplett, of Duffields. A very large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives attended the service. The body was laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery. The pall-bearers were her cousins, Dr. S. T., George M., W. J., W. R., Jacob and Samuel Knott. We extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

  • Flanagan, Myers; Approaching Marriage Announced

    Mr. and Mrs. William Bowman announce the approaching marriage of their sister, Miss Martha Lee Flanagan, of Bakerton, to Mr. James M. Myers, of Shepherdstown. The marriage will take place at Bakerton August 27th.

  • They Rest From Their Labors; Death of Many Aged Citizens

    Our Aged Citizens Passing Away– The Death Record of the Week.

    Mr. George W. Moler died at his home near Moler’s Cross Roads, in this county, last Friday afternoon. He had been sick for about two years with kidney disease, which was later complicated with lung and heart trouble. The funeral was held in the Lutheran Church at Uvilla last Sunday, Rev. C. H. Rockey officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery. The great crowd of friends and neighbors that attended the obsequies showed the esteem in which the deceased was held.

    Mr. Moler, whose age was 62 years, 7 months and 25 days, was a life-long resident of this vicinity. A member of the Lutheran Church for many years, his life has always been that of an earnest, conscientious christian man, and although unostentatious and quiet in his manner, his example and his influence have always been for good. His neighbors and those who knew him best with one voice testify to his exemplary character. He will be missed in the community where he has lived so long and in the church of which he was so devoted a member; and in the family where he was so good a husband and so kind a father there is a vacant place that may never be filled. The deceased is survived by his wife and by five sons, who have the sympathy of the people. Mr. Moler died as he had lived– a christian. He had his house in order, and expressed himself as being ready and willing to go when his Master called. Peace to his dust.

    Mr. James M. Lemen, one of the oldest citizens of this neighborhood, died at the home of his son, Mr. W. Manning Lemen, about three miles west of town, last Saturday night. Mr. Lemen, who was 87 years of age, has been greatly afflicted for a number of years, and death no doubt came to him as a welcome relief. The deceased leaves a daughter and five sons, of whom one lives in Pennsylvania and two in Illinois. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery on Tuesday, the funeral service being conducted in the M. E. Church South, of which he was a member. Rev. F. A. Strother officiated.

    Mr. V. M. Firor, a well-known resident of Charlestown, died at his home in that place on Monday, after a long illness. He was about 75 years old. Mr. Firor came to this county from Florida in 1868. He was a lawyer by profession, but was never in active practice, having devoted his time to real estate business. He took considerable interest in politics and public affairs, and had decided views upon most public questions. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church. His only surviving relative in Charlestown is a sister.

    Mrs. Catharine Fitzpatrick, who had reached the great age of 97 years, died in Harper’s Ferry last week.
