The people of Virginia, and especially those living in the Shenandoah Valley, are anxiously looking forward to the restoration of the C. & O. Canal as a means of securing to them cheap bituminous coal. Shepherdstown, W. Va., is the point designated for the transfer of Cumberland coal from canal-boats to cars on the Norfolk and Western Railroad and thence down the Valley. This, once accomplished, will create a boom for Shepherdstown, and those people will then realize what a blessing the C. & O. Canal is to the consumer of soft coal. Williamsport merchants will have to look to their laurels or they will not hold the position of the next heaviest coal shippers on the entire line of the canal. — Williamsport Leader.
