Through census records, city directories, and church documents, the lives of Mamie, her parents Charles and Ella, and their extended kin emerge, revealing patterns of migration, labor, and kinship.

  • Identifying the father of Annie G. Murphy

    Annie Gertrude Murphy Welsh was born in Maryland in 1840 to Irish immigrant parents. Raised among various Irish households in her early years, she finally settled after marrying Thomas Buchanan Walsh in 1858 at St. Peter’s Church, Harpers Ferry. Identified as the daughter of “B. Murphy,” this research explores possible fathers and Annie’s family connections.

  • The Road From York to Harpers Ferry

    The Flanagan clan was not known to have ever settled in Harpers Ferry. Instead, they traveled further and settled for a short period in present day Bardane. Later, they moved to the outskirts of Harpers Ferry. The exact area of their second settlement in Jefferson County is unknown. Unionville (Uvilla), Potomac View near Pack Horse Ford, and, of course, their Oak Grove (Bakerton), residence are all mentioned in various records.

    In order to determine their exact movements in Jefferson County, deeds will need to be studied further.
